What about safety?
A safe trip is our number one concern. Although we don't anticipate any problems and go out of our way to prevent them, we are prepared with cell phones, a personal locator beacon, water, and a first aid kit.
-
What about inclement weather?
Sometimes dogs are like kids who just want to go puddle hopping. For them rain, fog, and mist can be just another thing to experience while on the move. All Hikers carry rain gear for the dogs as well as jackets if they need to keep warm. If the conditions are unsafe, we will cancel walks and give the option of time at Canine Cove, or a quick "potty break" and individual time in your home.

My dog is great with voice commands until he sees a squirrel...
Even the best dogs can sometimes go "squirrel deaf" and give chase. Adventure Hikes always uses leashes and harnesses to maximize safety and control.
-
My dog can get aggressive on leash when other dogs run up. How do you deal with that?
Interactions with individual dogs or large packs of off-leash dogs on the trail is a common occurrence. For the safety of your dog, as well as the other dogs, a different form of exercise like Canine Cove's cageless daycare might be a better fit.
-
It's great that you use leashes, but what if my dog got away?
At Adventure Hikes, we like to be prepared for even the most unlikely of problems. Each dog is outfitted with a GPS tracker that will keep track of where they are at all times.
-
Distracted sniffing can sometimes lead to minor injuries with my dog. Are you prepared?
By being vigilant and taking no more than two dogs, our hikers minimize the chance of these types of issues, however, every hiker does carry a first aid kit so they can treat injuries right away.
-
What happens if my dog does get an injury?
If we have any concerns, including an injury, we will call you right away and work with you to determine how to proceed.
-
Will my dog get ticks on her hike?
At times, we will hike in areas that could have ticks. To go on an Adventure Hike, all dogs must be current with flea and tick medication.
-
My dog can overheat and needs lots of water. How do you deal with that on longer hikes?
Each hiker carries a water bottle that was specifically designed for use by search and rescue dogs who are out for extended periods of time. Our hikers continually evaluate each dog's health and will discontinue the hike if they have any concerns, including overheating.
-
Does this mean my dog will be walking nonstop for two hours?
Adventure Hikes are planned out and the plan is on file at Canine Cove, however we do not force dogs to hike from point A to point B and back. When you're a dog, sometimes you just need to sniff the roses, or a stick, maybe check out a strange bug, or just wiggle upside down in the grass. At Adventure Hikes, we are focused on what your dog wants to do so we can ensure they have the best time possible. Our longer hikes allow for plenty of sniffing, wiggling, and hiking, so your dog is both happy and tired.
-
What if the hiker is sick or on vacation?
Every hiker has a backup hiker in the event of an unforseen issue. If a hike is canceled due to inclement weather, we will still stop by and give them a "potty break" and can spend some one-on-one time or bring them to Canine Cove for daycare in lieu of a walk.
